Description: We take an in-depth look at a buck harvested a few weeks ago to see if this buck really is 10 years old! Grant examines his old injuries, jawbone, and a thorough age estimate using the tooth replacement and wear technique. If you've ever wondered how to tell how old a buck is, this is a video to watch! Lots of details on how to age a buck. With this buck, we have trail camera images of him for the past six years. He appeared mature from the first year we caught him on camera. Another good indicator of a buck’s age is shown by the lower jaw. What we didn't expect was that this buck would also have a food impaction that caused a large bulge on/inside the deers cheek. In this video, we explain more about food impactions or Lumpy jaw which are caused by a parasite called arterial worms. Due to the nerve damage and lack of muscle use, deer likely don’t know there’s food in their check or can’t remove it. Deer can live long periods of time with lumpy jaw. However, these impactions can become infected or bust open. As with many injuries to deer, it’s common for deer to survive the injury but succumb to the resulting secondary infection. The most common technique used to estimate a deer’s age is the tooth replacement and wear technique. See more details on how to use this technique in the video. #deerhunting #TeamOutdoors #DeerBiology
