Description: Holland was really ahead of its time in 1958 when it built a new industry using waste. Using ground-granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS or GGBFS), which is a byproduct of smelting (pyrometallurgical) ores and used metals. Broadly, it can be classified as ferrous (byproducts of processing iron and steel), ferroalloy (a byproduct of ferroalloy production), or non-ferrous/base metals (by-products byproducts of recovering non-ferrous materials like copper, nickel, zinc, and phosphorus). After another round of extreme heat, 3,000 degrees, a jet of high pressured steam blasts the melt into another chamber. It is then pooled into a bath of fine fibers, which was used for insulation. Today GGBS is used to make durable concrete structures in combination with ordinary cement and/or other pozzolanic materials. GGBS has been widely used in Europe, and increasingly in the United States and in Asia (particularly in Japan and Singapore) for its superiority in concrete durability, extending the lifespan of buildings from fifty years to one hundred years.
