Download Best Fiends for FREE: download.bestfiends.com/BFYT --------- Hatchling Splendid Cake Cake Batter: 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 2 cups sugar 3 tsp vanilla extract 6 large eggs 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 1/2 cups sour cream Buttercream: 2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature 1 tsp vanilla extract or seeds from 1 vanilla bean 5 cups confectioner’s sugar ½ cup fondant Yellow, orange, purple, and black food coloring Directions Bake the cake: 1. Beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until pale and smooth. Add the vanilla extract and eggs one at a time, mixing with each addition. 2. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Add this to the batter in 2 additions, alternating with the sour cream. 3. Spoon the batter into 3 greased and floured 6” round cake pans. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centers comes out clean. Cool completely. Make the buttercream: 1. Beat the butter with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and confectioner’s sugar one cup at a time, beating with each addition. Make the wings: 1. Roll the fondant out to ¼ inch thick. Cut it into wing shapes and set aside to dry at room temperature for 24 hours, or until very stiff. Assembly: 1. Slice the tops and bottoms off the cakes to smooth the surface and remove any excess browning. 2. Stack the cakes and carve into an egg shape with a flat base. Spread some buttercream between each layer. 3. Coat the cake in a thin layer of buttercream, called a crumb coat. This will catch any excess cake crumbs. Place some extra frosting in the area where the face will be. Chill the cake in the fridge for 20 minutes. 4. Make 2 slices in the sides of the cake and insert the fondant wings. If necessary, use scissors to trim the wings to create the perfect shape. Use a toothpick or skewer to mark the outline of the face. 5. Dye about ¾ of the buttercream yellow and pipe feathers all over the cake, avoiding the face. Leave space for the feet! Once all the feathers have been piped on, pipe on the feet. 6. Use some black buttercream to create the string and orange buttercream to create the beak. 7.
