The term “Vibrato” comes from the common vocal technique of the same name that involves generating a waver back and forth on the vocalists tones. When we explore the use of vibrato on the guitar it involves a rocking (or string flex & release) through the pushing and releasing of a fretted note on a string in a repeated pulse. Vibrato can be done fast or slow. The change in pitch results from the tightening and slackening of the guitar string as we rock it on its axis. This is a very similar process to using a whammy-bar, but the whammy bar also allows us to drop the pitch down. Whereas vibrato only flexes a note slightly above and back into the normal pitch.
