From 1978 to 1981, Phonogram Polygram Brazil gave prominence to a wide array of Brazilian Popular Music composers, instrumentalists, arrangers and anyone interested in making room for Brazilian Popular Music, which massively increased its popularity and fame. The series was named MPBC and it made Contemporary Brazilian Popular Music and its latest trends soar around the world. One of its most interesting traits was to play Brazilian instrumental music as an artistic expression disposed towards contemporaneity, an art form contributing to the contemporaneity of the time -- not to mention its brilliant graphic art designed by Aldo Luiz Bico de Pena. The series' opening turned out to become more successful as a documentary than a way to obtain profit, given that the Brazilian instrumental music has never really made its way to, say, a mainstream album. Currently, the few copies left over from the limited edition launched by Phonogram-Polygram are very rare collector's items or nuggets lost in used book stores and vinyl houses. 11 albums were recorded overall. These records were a significant part of my introduction to Brazilian instrumental music when I was 18 years old and started to investigate other genres.
