Description: Located deep in the Arashiyama district northwest of Kyoto, Giou-ji Temple (Giouji / Gioji) is a quiet temple surrounded by trees and a luxuriant moss garden. The temple is named after Gio a Shirabyoshi in Kyoto a female Japanese traditional dancer who lived during the Heian Period. The story goes that Gio fell in love with the Heike Clan's powerful leader Taira-no-Kiyomori and asked him to help the villagers of her hometown of Yasu. He built a water channel known today as Gioi-gawa. Unfortunately for Gio, Taira-no-Kiyomori grew tired of Gio and his affection changed to another Shirabyoshi dancer: Hotoke-gozen (1160-1180).
