Description: In this episode I fulfill a long-standing request of literally hundreds of viewers, AND we tear in to the Galant's cylinder head so we can get a better idea of what this build really needs. If you'd like to make a direct impact on everything I do here, please visit: patreon.com/jafromobile I hope this demonstrates that I do listen to viewers, my Patreon supporters, and I do try new things. This was finally the right project and the right time to do it. It's not going to replace any of my other methods of restoring parts, and it can't. In fact, it actually works better if I still use those other methods because they all benefit from each other in some way... but it's definitely a time saver, it definitely expands my arsenal of capabilities and what I can do in-house. For years I have been acquiring specialty tools specific to the kind of work my viewers need to see me do, stuff that's more specific to precision work or the 4g63 platform. Finally I'm able to expand my capabilities and demonstrate what this one can do for anyone. The purpose of this video is to give everyone the first person perspective of the kind of problem solving that goes into any engine rebuild, and the importance of being flexible enough to adapt to whatever you might find. You can have all the plans in the world before you turn the first bolt, but they can change in an instant... I'd be really tired of living this example except that I know to expect it. It's not just the condition of the parts that should steer your decisions. The parts availability, the mileage on the chassis, who or what it's being built for... Even the history of the car can change your plans. What good is an all original car that runs poorly? The purpose of rebuilding a car's components is to guarantee that it continues to be useful. I want a driver out of this one. A Galant VR-4 is both rare and unique, and even though this one was well taken care of, this one has been very well driven. The engine bay isn't 100% original. It's not a low mile barn find or a beauty queen stuffed in someone's garage. It shows a lot of character. Its engine platform is popular, but many of its unique parts were not available in other models of cars, and aren't still being produced. I could use parts from an Eclipse or Talon, but then the parts aren't any more correct for this one than their aftermarket replacements. So while I had dreams of a stock parts, stock build because the original parts all matched my power goals, I have a lot of things to accept. It's not just the cost of the repair. Whether I keep it OEM or go full-on aftermarket, it actually changes nothing about the value, desirability or collectibility of this car. It's nice that the numbers match. It's nice that they will continue to.. but the original parts would give it a very short life. It's a miracle that as many stock parts were still inside this engine with what it went through, but in the end, it's a numbers-matching worn out antique that even though it ran, still needs one of everything. Special thanks to everyone who recommended an ultrasonic cleaner so persistently for so long that I finally bought one... because it gave us all a great look at all of this stuff and how we got here in this project!
