According to studies by the USDA, large swaths of South L.A. suffer from low access to fresh food causing people to rely on fast food which is highly processed and nutritionally inadequate, this poses a significant risk to the health and causes cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and type 2 diabetes L.A., once the largest agricultural county in the United States, is now the county with the largest population of food-insecure people If 25 % of local food need was met with programs like Crop Swap LA almost 30k new jobs would be created, providing work to about 1 in 8 unemployed residents.
