Description: Say it with me: all kids can love math. It's our job to present math in ways that jive with them. This video offers some ideas you can use with your kids or students, to get them excited about math thinking and carry that feeling hopefully for the rest of their lives. Presenting the star of the clip, Romielle, in the 1st grade, as she takes on all the ways to group 8, then 10, then 12 items. We use colored and shiny glass stones she calls "dragon tears" as a great way to weave in toys she's already excited about. A big feature of this video is my encouraging her to articulate exactly what she's done with her dragon tears. For example, actually saying, "There are 4 groups, and 3 dragon tears in each group." This type of verbal ownership of the task is tremendously valuable for her learning. (And if kids ever stumble through articulating a thought, then that's a direct cue that they're in the throes of deep learning. They're figuring it out in real time.)
