In this video I'll run you through a simple exercise you can do yourself to start experimenting with basic lead melodies. This exercise will help you understand how to use a basic major scale but it will also help to train your ear. The examples in this exercise as simple tunes that do not have any overly complex harmonic/chordal structures. There may be songs out there where there are notes/chords outside of the standard diatonic chords of your key, they are a little trickier to figure out but the same principles will apply more or less.
