They have always said let the market tussle itself out, for me which I think is not a good thing. Government should have the capacity or the interest or the will to be able to dictate some of these things, because once you leave everything to market forces then you are leaving everything to the business people or the private sector. To a larger extent, the private sector is a little bit selfish, because the main aim of the private sector is profiteering so to what extent should they be allowed to profiteer? I think it's only the state that can come in and put a limit to that." ASSOCIATED PRESS Kampala, Uganda – 18 April 2022 25. The government blames the prolonged coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine - and many people are wondering how much worse the situation will get. STORYLINE: The once busy streets of Kampala's markets are getting emptier each day as more and more Ugandans are faced with ever increasing prices for basic commodities. Mariam Nantongo runs a wholesale shop in the middle of the city centre. A once vibrant area, she says the number of customers has drastically decreased since prices started rising. In recent weeks, many filling stations have run dry as Ugandans saw fuel prices shooting up.
