Description: When so many fantastical creatures appear on screen, you know CGI played a huge part! Every creature we see in the world of Fantastic Beasts was brought to life with highly-detailed computer animation, but their stand-ins on set were surprisingly effective. The creatures didn’t include all the same details - but they did the trick - even if it was just a puppet head and a person holding it! Creating Gnarlark’s likeness was majorly helped by the actor he was inspired by, doing extensive motion capture sessions, including a facial motion capture session involving a whopping ninety-eight individual cameras. One of Eddie Redmayne’s most challenging scenes was riding the Kelpie - and even though there wasn’t an actual Kelpie insight, Redmayne was getting soaked, filming himself and his Kelpie stand-in going wild underwater! When it came to bringing Nagini to life, extra special help was called in to help. It took a whole lot of computer animators and TWO contortionists to bring this mesmerizing transition to life. Jacob’s apartment was full of many moving pieces - ones that could fully take care of themselves - but how did they animate it to look like such a magical build? How about the apple strudel? The production team investigated and replicated EXACTLY how a strudel would be made, floating through the air, bringing in the help of special animation tech. As for traveling to old-timey New York? Well CG made it a whole lot easier, but that didn’t mean there weren’t pretty special and detailed practical sets for the actors to work on. Every detail brought to life by CG makes Fantastic Beasts a more convincing and exciting world to get lost in.
