Description: Somehow, Needles McBristletrunk always harbored a sneaking suspicion that he was not of this land, on account of how his dad could not seed the ground with the passing of a stiff breeze, or bear fruit from the joints in his limbs. And yet, his father's calm voice reassured him all the same. "I am a tree, too. I too am a tree. I am a true tree, son, truly I am your tree dad. Everyone you meet is a tree. All things are trees. That asshole dog is a goddamn tree." Needles thought about this mantra now - about the peace it used to bring him when his sapling head would fill with worries at night - and came to the realization that he was always, in a way, alone in this savage world of paperwork, talk radio and fingernails. He proceeded to weep in the way trees do, when it is time to grieve: By secreting the delicious sap that the sapsucker birds so love to eat. His tears fueled their powerful bodies for days to come until he could cry no more, and, full of holes and regret, he rotted away in that bedroom, dressed in his Christmas finest when the police finally found both of them.
