Description: Arundel is a market town and civil parish in a steep vale of the South Downs, West Sussex, England. The much-conserved town has a medieval castle and Roman Catholic cathedral. The River Arun runs through the eastern side of the town. Arundel’s history begins in Roman and Saxon times as an inland port and important market town. Since 369 AD, Arundel’s colourful Town Crier has announced news in the town. Arundel Castle is the seat of The Dukes of Norfolk parts of which date back to 1068. Next to Arundel Castle lies the Parish Church of St. Nicholas, built in 1380. The western portion came under the jurisdiction of the Church of England at the time of the Reformation, but the Eastern portion – The Fitzalan Chapel – remained the property of the Duke of Norfolk and is Roman Catholic.
