Description: tl;dr: the first episode of "TIME TIRPPER", my first DOOM project/mod, will be available soon! long version: as soon as i was done with HALCYONDAZE, i decided i needed to engage with something else for a while to keep my mind fresh. the thing i decided on was to finally, after over two decades of thinking about it, make a half decent DOOM map. i had only ever made one prior, so it was a learning experience! that learning experience spiralled out of control rapidly. what started as a single BOOM-compatible map quickly became a 7 map long GZDoom near-total-conversion. to go from "i have no idea how to make a staircase" to writing thousands of lines of ACS/DECORATE script in just a few weeks has been pretty exhilarating and really reinforced that i like nothing more than learning new tools/mediums that help me express my ideas. on one hand, i'm a bit of a "vanilla" stickler regarding DOOM - BOOM is about as far as i'll go in regards to gameplay modifications when i sit down and play, so i'm almost disappointed in myself! but on the other, i've been able to expand on the things that make DOOM so special to me and that capture my imagination. i've tried to keep things distinctly DOOM-ish - no 3D floors, no jumping, (preferably) no mouselook (but i guess i can't stop you!), etc - while shifting the gameplay more in the direction of arcade design and the atmosphere more introspective. it comes without even a hint of "modern doom" or "brutal doom" type extreme weapons/violence, etc. that shit is not my speed at all. naturally, this project has an original soundtrack (in multiple formats, at that! if you're not into tracker music, i've arranged MIDI versions as well!) which will be released at the same time. this project is deeply inspired by the likes of Ancient Aliens, Sunlust, Sunder, Back To Saturn X, and any number of manic arcade STGs. i crib a lot from these sources as i continue to learn the tools and language of DOOM. the first episode of TIME TRIPPER, an abstract adventure using DOOM's vocabulary, will be available soon!
