Description: We take a walk around the Elen Valley in Mid Wales and visit the Dambusters Dam where they trained during the Second World War. After that we toured around the whole valley visiting all the dams and reservoirs in the area. Subscribe: goo.gl/3D5gFc The Elan Valley reservoirs were built in the late 1800's to provide water for the population of industrialised Birmingham which was suffering from interminable epidemics of water borne diseases. The work was begun in 1894 and opened by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1904, the entire project cost £6 million which is around £240 million in today’s money. The worker’s village, designed by Herbert Tudor Buckland is the only purpose built Arts and Crafts model Village in Wales and the Nant-y-Gro Reservoir was the test site for the Dambusters bombing experiments in 1942. In July 1942 the prototype charge was proof-tested at a small dam in the Elan Valley, where 280lbs of high-explosive destroyed the central portion of the masonry dam. The experiment was a complete success. The evocative and sobering remains of the bombed dam may still be seen today.
