Description: Since I used a lot of electric heat in my garage workshop this last month, what will my power bill come to!? I'm afraid of how high it will be, but let's find out as I open my monthly electric bill! Please click SHOW MORE! Sure enough, the bill was higher than normal, but still not outrageous. I'm only running the heat and charging electric cars during "Off-Peak" rates during the night. That way, I pay $0.06/kWh instead of $0.20/kWh. The electric micro-boiler runs the hydronic system with PEX tubing embedded in the concrete. Although I only heat at night, the heat slowly comes out of the thick concrete for quite some time after the heater is shut down. This "thermal flywheel" effect is due to the mass of the concrete. The concrete slab is insulated with sheet foam below and around the edges. My total energy use in January was 1,505 kWh or just over 1.5 MEGA-Watts! That's more than double what my house uses in a typical month and more than a third higher than the average U.S. home. Although we consumed a LARGE amount of energy this past month, we've also earned credits with our power company during the summer OVERPRODUCING energy during peak use times. That energy goes to our neighborhood, while we get credited for it.
