This is something you can do whether you know scales, or not. And, it is going to provide benefits beyond just learning the Pentatonic scale patterns. The exercise is a simple 2-note idea all based upon adding intervals. Not only is it one of the most versatile strategies, (as it can be performed within almost any style of music), but it can be done with a step-by-step approach that only adds one new interval at a time. Hundreds of my private students have incorporated this exercise into their foundational lead playing studies. And, it has been helping them get better (and more melodic lines), on all of their songs, jam sessions and studio recordings. The main benefit of adding extended interval ideas to a Pentatonic scale is that they will add a range of new color to phrases. Plus, they can be especially helpful for any guitarist who wants to do more sophisticated soloing but perhaps doesn’t have enough of a theoretical background with modes.
