Description: Kusudama is a traditional Japanese art form which has evolved in to what is now generally referred to as modular origami. A kusudama for those not familiar with the term is a modular papercraft model in the shape of a ball. The name kusudama translates to something like “Medicine Ball” in Japanese. These models typically use 30 individually folded units joined together without the use of tape or glue. Some of the more complex kusudamas though can have a lot more units, maybe even 100+! You don’t have to have a PHD in math or in art to make gorgeous modular origami pieces. Most modules are quite easy to make. Putting them together might take a little patience and perseverance, but once you finish one, you will feel a great satisfaction in the accomplishment! When you see a picture of these kusudamas you might say “Oh that’s beautiful”. But when you actually make one and hold it in your own hands you will appreciate it all the more. Give it a try and see what you think.
