Description: Day in the life of a Japanese Koi Breeder. This is Tsuyoshi Kawakami, he is a Japanese Koi breeder and today is an exciting day. The family has run the Koi Farm for generations. Their fish are sold worldwide. Each fish is unique and the Torazo Koi Farm specializes in breeding Kohaku. A white fish with red patterns. The Koi is also called Nishikigoi in Japan, or better known as swimming jewels. Each fish is selected and raised from an early age. Sometimes it takes 8 to 10 years before a fish is fully grown and all that time the breeder takes care of the fish. This is Yuki and Homare. Yuki is the daughter of Tsuyoshi and Homare is her husband. Today they help harvest their biggest fish from the large pond in the mountains. After a short 15 minute drive, the Torazo family has arrived at the large pond in the mountains. The fish have spent the whole summer in nature here. In the winter they swim indoors or are sent by plane to their final destination, a pond somewhere in the world. This mud pond is a spa for the Koi. Lots of sun, high temperatures and lots of natural food. Because the Koi can develop in the most ideal conditions, they grow the fastest during this period. If it has been a cold summer, the results will be less good. Fortunately, this year was a good and warm summer. The breeder is really looking forward to studying his fish up close again after 6 months. Koi are bred with bloodlines just like in the horse world. Each bloodline is unique and has its own characteristics. The Torazo Koi Farm mainly breeds the varieties belonging to the Go Sanke group. The fish that come out of this mud pond one by one are quite valuable. I often get the question why Koi are so expensive. Secretly I already gave the answer at the beginning of this video. Each fish is selected by the breeder on the basis of a number of criteria. This happened a few months after the birth. Each fish must have, for example, a good build, length, nice skin quality and finally an attractive pattern. You can imagine when a breeder takes care of the fish for years, that this costs money.
