Nigerian born, Florida based David Izon takes on the undefeated Derrick “D-Train” Jefferson in a Heavyweight 10 rounder. This fight was part of the undercard of the Roy Jones Jr. vs. David Telesco main event where Jones’ IBF, WBA & WBC World Light Heavyweight Titles were on the line. Both of these power punching Heavyweights were 31 years old at this point and interestingly, David has a 1” reach advantage over Derrick who is 3” taller than him. Prefight records; Izon 24(20)-3, Jefferson 22(18)-0-1. Entering the fight, Izon had notable wins over the likes of Darroll Wilson, Terence Lewis & Lou Savarese while Jefferson had victories over top oppositions such as Maurice Harris, Bert Cooper & Obed Sullivan. From the opening bell, Jefferson was the aggressor and initiator of most exchanges as he incessantly applied high volume pressure while Izon usually countered at close range and comparatively, he did not land quite as many shots in most rounds. For the majority of the first half, Derrick was evidently more effective as he connected with many power shots upstairs and downstairs while David mostly retaliates only after taking or blocking a number of punches, and absorbed tremendous punishment throughout the bout. Time was called at the 1:21 mark of round 5, as Jefferson’s gumshield flew out when he was tagged while breathing with his mouth open. By round 6, Izon appeared to be fading as he had no answers to the unflinching onslaught of the unbeaten Michiganian, who showed increasing signs of fatigue entering the second half. At about the mid way point of round 7, Derrick wobbled David with a barrage of power shots and proceeded to go for the kill. Despite having about 90 seconds left, he failed to finish even after landing a number of head snapping punches largely due to fatigue, thus Izon survived a near knockout and made it to the bell. After 21 minutes of action, it was evident that David had lost every round and miles behind on points. However, Izon remarkably came back during the first minute of round 8 by rocking Jefferson to the ropes followed by a fusillade of blows but the determined Derrick retaliated by winging wild shots out of pure instinct (and somehow able to land some) in a desperate attempt to score an out-of-nowhere finish the way he did against Maurice Harris 2 months earlier, but David displayed remarkable toughness and weathered the storm once again. With about 45 seconds left in the round, a couple of light punches in a clinch derailed the pull of D-Train who hit the canvas only for the second time in his career due to sheer exhaustion. He courageously beat the count but was helplessly flailing with every punch thrown or taken by him. Just before the bell sounded, Jefferson’s gumshield was knocked out of his mouth for the second time and he somehow survived, but had difficulties returning to his corner after the round ended as he was breathing laboriously with his legs evidently no longer under him. Derrick’s irrecoverable weariness resulted in an inevitable denouement early in round 9; he was wobbly from the moment he got off his stool and swaying back and forth from the lightest shots dished out at him, thus referee Arthur Mercante Jr stepped in to halt the fight at the 0:11 mark. This was the first career setback for Derrick Jefferson who was well ahead in all 3 scorecards at 78-74, 78-73 & 78-72 at the time of the stoppage. As for David Izon, it was the third time in which he endured great punishment in the early goings but miraculously came back to score a stunning, hard earned come-from-behind and well deserved knockout victory. The first time was against Darroll Wilson in November 1998 and the second time was against Terence Lewis in June 1999 where he won via KO4 and KO5 respectively. In the main event, Jones overwhelmed the determined Telesco to remain the Undisputed World Light Heavyweight Champion via a lopsided UD12 in typical prime Captain Hook fashion despite entering the fight not at 100% due to a fractured left wrist suffered in a motorcycle accident 3.5 weeks earlier.
