Description: In our last episode, Jeff explained how to do an after-action review of a training class. The next step is to take what you've learned from the review and make it part of your TRAINING PLAN. Pick two or three areas you really want to work on, but be realistic! You can't fix everything immediately. Don't tackle too much at once. Isolate the specific change you want to make. Example: you're placing your finger on the trigger incorrectly, causing your shots to land off target. Determine how much "time, talent and treasure" you have available to expend to work on it. Establish a goal that spells out what will count as a "win." Example: "Place my finger correctly on the trigger for at least 7 out of every 10 rounds I fire." Making the goal very specific helps you focus your energy to accomplish that behavioral change. Now, design the drills that will help you achieve your goal. Example: "One round fired at an 8-inch target from 10 yards, repeated 10 times." Plan your range time to do the drills, but be realistic about how much time this will take. After each range session, assess how things went. Be consistent, and you will see improvement over time until you achieve your goal. Then, step up to a new, more ambitious goal!
