They only account for 0.4 to 0.8 babies in every million births in the US. Today's conjoined twins are Yigit and Derman Evrensel from Turkey who remained attached for the first 18 months of their lives before being separated on January 28th, 2020. The fact that Yigit and Derman are two craniopagus boys is even rarer as in most cases, the twins are girls. Back in June 2018 in Turkey, Omer and Fatma became the happy parents of a pair of conjoined twins after categorically refusing to carry out an abortion even after knowing the condition of the twins as they considered them to be a gift from Allah as they reported. Soon after the conjoined boys were born, their parents started looking for ways to separate them. In fact, added to the mobility issues, remaining as they were could cause the heart and kidneys of one the conjoined twins to take on an extra load and over time risk failure. Such surgery being unavailable in Turkey, London's Great Ormond Street hospital in The UK offered to help carry out this complex operation. The same team had carried in 2019, the separation surgery of Safa and Marwa, the link to their video is in the description box. After receiving more than $1.5M as a donation from two Turkish Businessmen, the twins were flown to the UK. Over the span of 2 months, the two boys underwent 3 major surgeries to expand their skin, detangle their blood vessels, completely separate their brains and reconstruct their skulls. The surgeries were particularly complex, lasting more than 40 hours in total, because the twins had parts of their brains in each other's skulls. The parents describe the moment they saw the twins separated for the first time as "being in the clouds". The surgeries went smoothly and were successful. Yigit and Derman had to remain few more months in the UK for further treatments before flying back to Turkey as two happy separate toddlers.
