Its title was given by Joseph Schmeller who edited it in 1847. This manuscript, which is considered the most important and extensive collection of medieval secular poetry of the 12th and 13th centuries, contains fiery poems with attacks on the abuses of the state, the church and education, the power of money and the decline of morals. There are dance and love songs in Middle High German, mixed German-Latin and French-Latin poems, which pay tribute to the sensual pleasures of eating, drinking, gambling and loving. It is a wonderful collection of poems and songs by monks and goliards (student minstrels): some are gay, some sad, some coarse; some Christian, some pagan; but all have a deep humanity in common. For his cantata, Orff selected about twenty of these poems and made a collection of them, which he entitled Cantionesprofanae cantoribus et choris cantandae comilantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis (secular songs for soloists and choirs, with an accompaniment of music and magical images). These poems live from the scenic unity of music, speech and movement and indeed go beyond purely musical means (diatonic melody, the apparatus of a traditional symphonic orchestra, reinforced by five percussionists and two pianists, produces a 'hammered' sound of steel and leads to a new dimension in the music of the orchestra). This cantata, imbued with great symbolism, is built around the powerful medieval theme of the Wheel of Fortune, randomly dispensing good or bad luck. It begins and ends with an incantation to the goddess Fortune, mistress of the world and of human destiny. The Wheel of Fortune presides over the three parts of this work. In each of them, men indulge in the natural pleasures of life: Nature ("Primo vere" and "Uf dem anger"), the Table ("In taberna") and Love ("Cour d'amours").
