I also give you a way to exit the upward spiral using what are called altered chords. Altered (or alt chords) means the chord extensions (thing 9, 11, 13) are either sharp or flat. You can decide for yourself which are sharp and which ar flat but I recommend flatting the the 9 and 11 so that the move to the fourth scale degree above the root sounds nice. The flat nine and flat 13 are really close to the chord tones from the major chord built off of the fourth degree higher than the preceding chord. If that doesn't make sense, don't worry about it. Just try out the exercise and it will make more sense intuitively. This video teaches you level 3, which is the third video in this series of four. When you are finished watching the video, you will be able to play 13 and 9 chords with ease and you will even have an awesome sounding exercise to help your compositions and make practicing enjoyable. You can find my other tutorials by searching the name of the song you want to play + "Joe Raciti" or "jraciti1".
