Description: At just 15 years old, Tairāwhiti local Hyrum Paea narrowly survived when he fell off the back of a travelling ute while drinking. The ute ran over his head, leaving him with a serious brain injury - and his brother, who witnessed it, with PTSD. Prior to his accident Hyrum was becoming increasingly involved with gangs, and credits the accident with saving him from prison, or perhaps even death. It’s been a long rehab journey back to walking, and talking, and Hyrum - now 26 - is still aiming towards independent living. But his primary goal is to educate others in his community about drinking, driving, and making better life choices.
