Description: The biggest portrait drawing mistake has more to do with our eyes than our drawing techniques. When you look at any subject there is an illusion taking place with the perception of the values. And unless you are aware of this phenomenon, you will make some major mistakes when it comes to shading. This is by far the most common mistake I see in my drawing students. Once the proportions are correct and they begin to shade their drawing, they fail to realize that the values they are looking at are heavily influenced by the surrounding values. But on their drawing, they are comparing those values to the white of the paper. This video shows how we are being fooled and how to compensate for this.
