If you’re unaware of what Smooth jazz is, then you’re in for a real treat because this lesson is totally dedicated to learning about the chords and the scales that are used across this beautiful music style. For the uninitiated, Smooth Jazz is a style of Jazz that everyone should have in their repertoire. While this approach to playing jazz applies a lot of the same chord harmony that would be found in traditional jazz, the way it is structured is quite different. Smooth Jazz harmony and melody are closer to those seen in Pop or in Top-40 music. The result is a sound that makes Smooth Jazz music more palatable to a listener who generally does not listen to traditional jazz. In this lesson, we will go over a chord progression that will work to build a connection to the most common chords performed in Smooth Jazz compositions. We will also study how to perform a melodic example, and one of the most popular scales used by improvisers. Additionally, I will provide a variation to the scale that should help you get on track to authentic Smooth Jazz solos.
