Description: Ballater and District Pipe Band, led by Drum Major Ian Esson, playing "The Green Hills of Tyrol", "When the Battle's o'er" and "Lochanside". This was part of their displays around the village in July 2019, with the band playing outside Braemar Mews, opposite the Fife Arms in Braemar. The band are based in the nearby town of Ballater and they wear Ancient Hunting Robertson tartan kilts and plaids. The tune "Green Hills of Tyrol" is a well-known Scottish bagpipe tune, but it originated in Italy and traveled to Scotland via the Crimean War. Pipe Major John MacLeod, serving with the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders in 1854, heard the tune "La Tua Danza Sì Leggiera" from the opera Guglielmo Tell (William Tell) by Rossini, being played by a Sardinian military band and transcribed it for the bagpipes. It remained best known as an instrumental piece until Andy Stewart added a new set of lyrics, which became his 1960 hit, "A Scottish Soldier."
