Hometown hero and former Olympic Gold Medalist Andre “S.O.G” Ward takes on top contender and Cuban defector Sullivan Barrera in his 2nd pro fight at 175 pounds in Oakland, California. Both fighters were undefeated at this juncture of their respective careers. Prefight records; Ward 28(15)-0, Barrera 17(12)-0. In March 2007, 23 year old Ward moved up to 168 pounds and went on to emerge as the winner of the Super Six World Boxing Classic to become the Undisputed World Super Middleweight Champion in November 2011. During his 6 year stint at Super Middleweight, he outclassed top oppositions such as Allan Green, Arthur Abraham, Edison Miranda, Mikkel Kessler, Carl Froch, Chard Dawson & Sakio Bika and has been highly regarded as one of the greatest fighters in the division along the likes of Roy Jones Jr, Joe Calzaghe, James Toney etc. In June 2015, he made his Light Heavyweight debut stopping Paul Smith via TKO9 and for his next fight, he was up against Sullivan Barrera who had 2 noteworthy wins over Karo Murat & Jeff Lacy. In the early goings, Ward established control to largely overwhelm the determined Barrera through 12 rounds with his dazzling boxing skills, where he utilized a sharp jab to dictate the distance and capitalize on openings with unanswered pinpoint counter shots. In round 3, Sullivan was knocked down for the first time in his career with a left hook high on the head. In round 8, Andre was deducted a point by referee Raul Caiz Sr for a low blow that sent the Cuban to the canvas. In round 10, Ward was cut on the left eye from an accidental headbutt that did not inhibit his performance in any way. After 36 minutes of boxing, Andre Ward won via UD12 with scores of 117-108, 117-109 & 119-109 to improve his unblemished record to 29(15)-0 while Sullivan Barrera was handed the first defeat of his pro career. In November 2016, S.O.G defeated then prime unbeaten Sergey Kovalev via a very close and competitive UD12 to become the Undisputed World Light Heavyweight Champion where he garnered the IBF, WBA & WBO titles.
