Description: This was written in response to the recent UN report on climate change. A Poem for the Environment by John D Ruddy The leaves for years were growing, The embers small were glowing. The inferno tall billowing, And the oil keeps flowing. The tundra once was snowing; The permafrost is showing; The rot of millenia narrowing; And the oil keeps flowing. The gulfs are full of sorrowing; Leaks and bursts upflowing; Environmental damage harrowing; And the oil keeps flowing. Thew wells, corp’rations are stowing; The guns and bullets are glowing; Another sand city overthrowing; And the oil keeps flowing. The children’s brows furrowing; Grown-ups are not following; Their future is not for knowing; And the oil keeps flowing. Day After Tomorrow foreshadowing; The science says current is slowing; The winter for longer is snowing; And the oil keeps flowing. The world the science is knowing; We know the oil is going; Descent is surely growing; And the oil keeps flowing. The options to replace are growing; The tide, the air are going; The coasts are not shallowing; And the oil keeps flowing. The burgers yum are showing; Like never before they’re growing; The methane is surely blowing; And the oil keeps flowing. The conversation about it is going; We talk, talk, talk and keep mowing; We talk more and more and more knowing; And the oil keeps flowing. The politics are blowing; Cash in hand bestowing; The line is not for towing; And the oil keeps flowing. The reports are in and showing What we’ve known for decades is growing; The pill is hard for swallowing; And the oil keeps flowing. Control of the world had spun out; Everyone will have their gun out; The Ivory Tower would have the sun out; And the oil has run out. OR The world some sense has found, Sustainability, a bright future we sound; The generation who fixed it renowned, And the oil stays in the ground.
