Description: In the third and final installment of math with my dad, together we solve equations with the variable on each side. In essence, we use the same rules as always: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division Properties of Equality. (That's fancy for combining like terms using math.) Once we isolate the variable, the equation is solved. During this shared lesson, we're fortunate enough to hear my dad talk about the concept of "being tricked" by a problem, or even by a teacher. We share some laughs over memories I have of students who struggled with the feeling like I, as their teacher, would ever dream of "tricking" them to get problems wrong. It's a great conversation, on the mindset of the empowered learner. Learning math can always be fun and connective.
