Description: In case you missed it, I filled in for Whitechapel on their latest U.S. tour. Was an absolute pleasure touring with them - they're all very chill, nice human beings (& the shows were a lot of fun, too!). I will be continuing to fill-in / work for them on their upcoming EU dates (which I'm quite looking forward to!). "When A Demon Defiles A Witch" is from Whitechapel's latest album, 'The Valley'. If you've yet to check the album out, I strongly suggest you do - it's my favorite album of their's to date (for real, it's REALLY good). Drums on the album were recorded by Navene Koperweis (& he did a phenomenal job! Much love, bro!). iTunes link to 'The Valley' is below - music.apple.com/us/album/the-valley/1440345266 I tracked this video quite awhile before I went on tour with them, & have since started playing two kick drums. Fret not ya'll, I plan on tracking some new videos with the big ol' double bass setup soon! Setup for this video is as followed: #Tama Starclassic B/B (diameter by depth) 10x7 12x8 14x12 16x14 20x16 14x6.5 Tama Re-Issue Bell Brass #Meinl Cymbals (from left to right, if sitting behind the kit) 18" Pure Alloy China 18" Byzance Brilliant Medium Crash 14" Byzance Traditional Medium Hi-Hats 10" Byzance Brilliant Splash 10" MB20 Rock Splash 13" Byzance Brilliant Medium Hi-Hats 19" Byzance Brilliant Medium/Thin Crash 20" MB20 Heavy Bell Ride 18" Pure Alloy China (yes, I used two of the same china) 15" Byzance Dual Hat Bottom under a 16" Classics Custom Trash Crash (stack combo) #Evans Drumheads Toms - Clear EC2's (batter), Clear G1's (reso) Snare - Coated ST Dry (batter), SnareSide 300 (reso) Kick - Coated UV1 EQ4 (batter), ported ebony EQ4 (reso) Mixing was done by #TheHomie Anup Sastry. Drums are all natural except for the kick which is a sample/natural blend. If you're interested in mixing / audio work from Anup, contact him using the email address below! anupsastrydrums@gmail.com I also recently uploaded an instructional video of my Double Bass Endurance Exercise to my web store. 20+ minutes of video content & detailed PDF are included. Click the link below if you'd like to check it out - gumroad.com/l/LNcrQ I actually started playing this song quite differently live. If you're familiar with the song, the double bass in the chorus is not broken up as much (straight 16th's all the way through... 16th's at 240 that is, or 32nd's at 120. However you want to look at it). As singles, playing the album version is virtually impossible for me (at least, consistently day-to-day on tour), so I came up with this alternate version where I break it up a bit, & added a linear singles fill mid-way through (to continue emulating the "feel" of straight 16th's). Live however, I decided to do the chorus as double strokes so I could keep the straight 16th's going through the whole chorus. Lol, not gonna lie ya'll, I HATE the "death metal" double strokes. In my experience, they're 100% in the trigger setting, & in general I think they're incredibly lame. The first stroke is very articulated & the second is virtually inaudible. I invested some time into learning it many years ago before coming to the conclusion that it was not for me, & have avoided doing it ever since (singles for lyfe). But for the sake of the overall sound of the song / band, I decided to swallow my pride & do it live (just for this song) to play it more like the album. So I'm genuinely curious as to what you all think of this version - I plan on playing it more like this (as singles, with a few breaks) on the next run of shows that I do with the band.
