Description: We have the best hospitals, most highly trained doctors, and people come from all over the world to get medical treatments in the US. Yet, we’re lagging behind almost every other country in health metrics, including life expectancy and infant mortality. That’s because we’re not being set up for success: The policies and systems we rely on for healthcare aren’t supporting prevention, education, and accessibility for all our communities. We are spending a massive amount of money on healthcare (1 of every 5 federal dollars) but we’re not spending on the social services to invest in lifestyle wellness that prevents disease in the first place. I was joined by Congressman Jim McGovern, Dr. Prakash Patel, and David Ortiz to discuss the importance of using food as medicine, through changes in our government policies and healthcare. We also talk about the efforts Congressman Jim McGovern is making to pass the Medically Tailored Home-Delivered Meals Demonstration Pilot Act of 2021, a bill that would establish a Medicare pilot program to address the critical link between diet, chronic illness, and senior health. Tweet your local congressman to support the bill and/or click on the link which provides you with a letter you can email to your congressman: performancekitchen.com/pages/food-is-medicine-movement Rep Jim McGovern is a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Massachusetts's 2nd congressional district since 1997. He is the chair of the House Rules Committee and of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China as well as the co-chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission. McGovern is also the chairman of the board of the Congressional Hunger Center and is known as a leading voice on ending hunger and food insecurity both in the United States and globally. He was a key architect of the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program. For his work, he has earned a 2016 James Beard Leadership Award from the James Beard Foundation, as well as a 2008 McGovern-Dole Leadership Award from the World Food Program USA. Dr. Prakash Patel is a Lead Operating Executive at GrowthCurve. Prakash has 25 years of healthcare leadership experience and a proven track record of driving strategy and operations to deliver growth across a broad spectrum of healthcare areas. Most recently, Prakash served as Executive Vice President and President for Anthem, Inc.’s Diversified Business Group, where he led the business’s strategic direction and its multi-fold growth. David Ortiz is a ten-time All-Star, three-time World Series champion, seven-time Silver Slugger winner, and 2022 MLB Hall of Fame Inductee.
