Description: "To use this video in a commercial player, advertising or in broadcasts, please email Brave Bison at licensing@bravebison.io ***Read The Description*** The Ka‘ū Desert in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Yes, this video is long and not for most. Its the start of my new series of hiking videos. They will appear in my Hike-U-Mentaries playlist. If you're staying at home due to the worldwide pandemic, go on a hike with me. No fancy editing or cool music. Just everything I heard while out there. Wear headphones or watch in a quiet place to avoid distracting sounds and take in the peacefulness of the area. Taking distancing to the extreme. At the time last year, this was my longest hike in almost 3 years. Testing my new hips in a rural setting carrying a 30 lb backpack. This is just a small area of the Ka‘ū Desert. As it was a test for my capabilities I didn't want to venture too far from my vehicle. I ended up doing about 6 miles and was on my feet for over 6 hours. Lots of exploring. I even crawled into a small ancient spatter cone. The video starts at Mauna Iki and not at the beginning of my hike because I started before sunrise. It was quite chilly at the start. 48 degrees. Early high clouds and sporadic sunshine to warm and sunny. Most of the darker lava flows are from the early 1970s. This hike takes you into the 1790 eruption footprints area. I've been exploring this region for decades and documenting the deterioration of the ancient footprints. Last year's summit collapse had little effect on them but, the hurricanes that brought flash floods did considerable damage. Many are now gone. I only show two locations that are nearly gone. Others I didn't want to show their location as people have been known to steal them in the past. I doubt that's even possible anymore as they're barely there and too fragile. There are only small pockets of ash in the areas I explored from last year's summit collapse. Pooled up by the floods. Rarely seen puddles were present as it had just rained before my arrival. As usual, I rarely talk in this video. The weather was beautiful with no wind at all early on and just a slight breeze near the end. I used the GoPro Hero 7 Black and the Freewell ND4 Filter. Also, the ZLMC Foam Windscreen in the beginning. I had to remove it as the lens started fogging up. I was also testing out my Atlas Athlete camera backpack. By far the most comfortable camera pack I've ever used. atlaspacks.com/collections/atlas-packs/products/atlas-athlete-camera-pack?variant=12837673304146 Originally this was posted for a specific reason and seeing it's so long I wasn't sure my regular viewers would be interested but, I figured might as well make it public after putting in all of this work. The nice thing about watching videos is you can skip ahead and watch at any pace you want. Photos in my website gallery were shot with my Panasonic GH5 and the Leica 8 - 18mm. Dual image stabilization. I'm really enjoying the micro four-thirds camera system. My entire kit weighs only 7.5 lbs covering 8mm - 400mm (16mm - 800mm 35mm equivalent). The gallery can be seen here. lavapix.com/gallery/2-25-19-kau-desert The volcano stopped months ago and it could be years before it gets going again. I have tons of other videos I've been wanting to make so, now I can get busy on them. Thanks for subscribing.
