Description: An interview that started as reassuring, when he said the present Covid situation in India is under control, turned dramatically into one that could be deeply worrying and of great concern when Professor of Virology, Prof. Shahid Jameel, said two Covid variants recently found in South Africa, BA.4 and BA.5, and, possibly, BA.2.12.1, which some newspaper reports have claimed has been identified in India (although this has not been officially confirmed), could pose a major threat because they contain the L452R mutation (in the case of BA.4 and BA.5) or the L452Q mutation (in the case of BA.2.12.1) alongside the other Omicron mutations and, thus, these three sub-variants could have the potential to be as infectious as Omicron and the potential to be as virulent as Delta. If this turns out to be the case we are talking of the worst of both worlds combined in the new sub-variants.
