Last April during the 2021 NFL draft the Dallas Cowboys picked Micah Parsons at 12th overall. They were originally at pick 10, but supposedly since none of the cornerbacks that they wanted were available, they opted to trade down two spots while grabbing an extra third round pick. Now I know a lot of people were confused by this trade considering they just handed Devonta Smith to the Eagles, but in my opinion, this was actually a very good trade. If they knew that Micah Parsons was going to be available at 12, there’s no reason at all for them to hold onto this pick. Regardless, fixing the Dallas Cowboys defense was the number one priority for this team during the off-season. They were awful for the vast majority of last season. One area where this defense had to improve was in its back seven. While the cornerback position, which we just talked about was the preferred pick, the linebacker position was something they also needed to fix. After Leighton Vander Esch’s incredible rookie year, he honestly hasn’t been the same. Now part of this has to do with injuries, but needless to say, it was a wise decision to pick his replacement. Now enter Micah Parsons. If there’s one thing that immediately stands out is that he’s a complete freak of an athlete. He’s 6-foot-3 246 pounds and he ran a 4.36 40 yard dash at his pro day. Along with that he had one of the best broad jumps of any linebacker in the class and his 3-cone time was also really impressive. As a side note and for this video, we had to rely on his 2019 tape as he sat out last season due to concerns over COVID. In this video, I discussed Micah Parsons' ability in pass coverage, against the run, and as a pass rusher. I also discussed his role in Dan Quinn's 4-3 under defense. This video is just over 8 minutes long. I hope you enjoy it! Sam's Draft Grade: Mid First Round Pro Comparison: Myles Jack - Both players are versatile linebackers who can play all three positions but are better suited for the Weakside (WILL) linebacker position. I think Jack had better instincts and awareness coming out of college, but I think Parsons is the better pass rusher.
