Description: A myth sometimes said about motor oils including Pennzoil is that they cause wax and sludge in a vehicle’s engine. That claim is entirely false. In this video, Mark Ferner, Project Manager for Pennzoil debunks that all-too-common myth. Crude oil can contain wax molecules; however, oil refiners have been using methods like solvent extraction and catalytic de-waxing for decades in order to remove wax deposits that can be found in crude oil. Thus the amount of wax in any of today’s conventional motor oil is essentially non-existent or immeasurable. Sludge that looks milky or dark isn’t from wax. It’s likely from the combination of moisture that naturally occurs during combustion and the detergents in the engine oil.
