Description: How to turn a Regular Fresnel Lens into a Compact/Foldable Fresnel Lens. easy DIY. video shows how i cut my "fire starting" fresnel lens in half and added hinges! still works just as good (but now it's half the size!). page-size fresnel lenses are the perfect size for fast and easy 'fire starting' ...but are a little big when you want something compact. this worked great. the hinges are solid, and it works every time. durable and compact. great to have when camping and hiking. the lens itself is a rigid "page size" magnifier. it's made of clear PVC plastic. amazon has them. cost about $10. the hinges are from amazon too. cost about $4 (for 4 of them). here's the link to the original uncut 'fire starting' Fresnel Lens video. it shows the total power of the lens (video shows many different things bursting into flames in just seconds). youtu.be/TrKIYG-GFjM Note: i was pretty rough with the lens and the hinge-screws in this video. it's better to use a small hack saw or a saw with fine teeth and a low vibration. i used a jigsaw (on highest speed setting) with a wood cutting blade. plastic cuts better with a fine toothed blade and a slower speed. also don't force the hinge screws. they will tighten down perfect if you drill the holes with a 5/64" drill bit. the bit i used at first was 1/16th". a 5/64th inch drill bit might sound like a crazy size but it's a standard bit size that comes with most basic drill bit sets.
