While lowering the volume and softening the sound, it makes mechanical noises more audible and may produce other side effects such as a slight dissonant sound from the fabric lightly striking many strings at once. First the pianos were used as they were. From 2015 on they often were dampened with cotton or synthetic-cotton-blend. At the moment its synthetic felt with a layer of cotton. What you heard until 2019 in these videos was the original recording (mostly in untreated rooms) with hardly any post processing. Since then i started to edit and alter the sound. Often, not much of the original recording remains in the final edit. Only in older videos you can hear what the pianos actually sound like. Over the years i ve learned to handle small repairs and adjusment. But for things like the regular tuning of the whole instrument, i rely on a professional piano maker to come.
