Momentum, like velocity, is relative. Let us take a 1,000-kg car moving at 20 m/s with respect to the surface of a highway, traveling northward. If the car is driven, the momentum of the car is relative to the body of the person driving the car which is zero. And if a person stands by the side of the road, the momentum of the car relative to that person is 20,000 kg · m/s northward.
