This is not a playable thing and was just an animation, but if it was a game it would just be a remake of SMB3 where each level would be remastered with a different theme, and each level would have a hidden wand, and upon finding the wands you'd transform (unlock) playable characters, and that's it :) there are more locked characters than stages in the game so, as for how the others are unlocked, your guess is as good as mine.
