As the image of Beakman nears, the Liza figure spins and moves away. The base of the dancing girl is rounded and has inside a magnet oriented north straight up while the image of Beakman has a magnet with its north at a 45 degree angle. When brought together the magnet under the girl tilts towards 45 degrees but then the figure becomes unstable and rolls to restore balance. Anyone else remember this show? This behavior is related to the asymmetric shape of the bottom of this kind of rattleback, each is somewhat propeller shaped with an "S" curve along the bottom ridge. This pair are mirror images of each other (enantiomorphs) in terms of shape. Centripetal acceleration increases proportional to the distance from the axis of rotation, so the liquid stacks highest far from the center. Also, a faster spin rate results in a deeper and steeper parabola- note how the surface flattens out as the exhibit comes to rest. Additional physics- a pair of waves (from the initial impulse) travel along the parabolic surface of the contained liquid, creating temporary peaks and valleys as they constructively and deconstructively interfere. As seen here in 240 fps slow motion, the symmetric waves travel and reflect along the curved surface for the first few rotations until damped out via viscosity and friction.
