This routine demonstrates how Ben Greenfield has woven these exercises into his own morning ‘stretch’ routine for optimizing energy, morning bowel movement, wakefulness, productivity and spiritual enhancement. These movements from the Five Tibetan Rites originated in India by a group of lamas (teachers of the Dharma in Tibetan Buddhism) who had apparently discovered a “Fountain of Youth.” The lamas practiced five special exercises called ‘rites’ that led to health, strength, vigor and vitality. The Five Tibetan Rites focus on seven spinning ‘psychic’ vortexes in the body (the brain, base of throat, liver, reproductive organs and knees). It is thought that as we age, the spin rates of these vortexes diminish, resulting in poor health. But the spin rates of these vortexes can be restored by performing these key movements. Ben has woven these movements into his own stretch routine, although with a handful of other exercises borrowed from Tai Chi and Qi Gong practices.
